Hey Dad, it’s Time

Cascaded muscles, twitch and flame
cells stall, breath’s heavy
hair on arms rise as thorn
knees tremble, Is this the call?

Trumpet’s blew, aim, draw, fire
men howl like wolves atop
steel molded and kissed by fire
sear the skin, burn flesh across

Metal balls, filled with gunpowder
fired in sky, land on soil
in trenches and pits, my men lay dead
with no widows to wail, no home in sight

Scented marigolds bloom
on the rotten flesh of lads
someone lost their brother and husband
I lost my dad
